From Houston, Tx-The second conference series of the year had a Texas State sweep written on it as the Bobcats took 3 straight from LSC Montgomery. The humid Houston weekend gave way to three solid starts from the pitching staff, and slam fest from the Texas State offense.

Bobby Smiga started off the weekend in game one allowing only one earned run in five innings while striking out 7, securing the win for the Bobcat ace. Team captain Sean Pilola set the pace for the offense once again on Saturday morning batting 2-3 including a late inning homer that ended up being the game-winning run. Pilola commented on his and the teams offense saying “We didn’t hit as well as I thought we would but we’re always continuing to get better and better and hopefully our luck will continue onto the next series as well”

Game two of the series was headlined with another pitching gem from sophomore right-hander Trenton Cox. He dealt 7 innings of baseball while setting down 23 of the 32 Montgomery batters faced.  Cox though was not alone as he had some definite help from the offense. Shortstop Justin Yonker and first baseman Jordan Ramirez had solid days at the plate and led the Bobcats in a 10-5 win. Each of them batted 3-3, combining for 4 of the teams 10 RBI’s. “I’ve been working on my swing a lot, and I’m starting to see the ball and hits are just going my way”-Justin Yonker

With the series already won, senior pitcher Matt Steiner set out for the sweep of the conference series. Steiner had some early trouble with command, but it was on a day where offense outnumbered all pitching woes. The 8-1 Texas State team scored 23 runs on 19 hits in the 9 innings played Sunday afternoon giving them another in the win column as they headed back to San Marcos.

The team’s next series is at home against Sam Houston State March 31st, and April 1st. The Bobcats are confident and excited to get back on the field against yet another conference team. “As long as we go out there playing our game, cut out the errors, and don’t let the big innings happen we should do pretty good”-Justin Yonker

From San Marcos, Tx- The Texas State weekend opened up with a huge win from the bobcats over Lone Star Montgomery in their second series matchup on the year. Jordan Ramirez started Saturday’s affair going six of the seven innings before yielding to lefty freshman Tim O’Reilly. Ramirez had some success starting on the bump earlier in the year but with starter Trenton Cox coming back from ankle problems earlier last summer there wasn’t a spot open this spring in the rotation until the team recently moved Senior Matt Steiner to the bullpen. Although Montgomery produced 7 runs the team made sure though that there would not be any problems to worry about as they tacked on 22 runs plating 13 in the first two innings.

Sunday’s matchups included duo starters Bobby Smiga and Trenton Cox completing the sweep for the bobcats in another display of pitching ability. There were some showers that joined the game but luckily the team got the contest in. Smiga, a player with a great general knowledge of the game, mastered the opposition Sunday going 6 innings while allowing 3 runs before permitting Justin Yonker to come in the game to close it out. Yonker, who is primarily the team’s shortstop, had a rough inning, but after some shoulder and arm problems earlier in the year, it was great to see the righty step back on the mound and get the job done.

With the rain and two wins out of the way game three’s starter Trenton Cox didn’t take time to let the Montgomery offense catch up. Cox is not a very hard throwing righty but makes up for it with the quick movement and deception on his breaking pitches. He allowed 7 runs, 5 of them earned, while sitting down 6 on strikeouts. The righty gave up a few more runs than the sophomore usually does but the Texas State offense again found a way to come back. With the bases loaded in the bottom of 7th, Dakota Herrera slapped a pitch into short right field to give Texas State another win in walk off fashion. The team chemistry and ability to come back from nearly any deficit has proved put them in line for a notch in the win column every time that they greet the field. As a team that is classified mainly by critics, the bobcats have found a way to win and have proved time and time again that they want to continue it. With every cleat that is laced, and jersey that is buttoned up by familiar hands there is a new reason to continue the tear that Texas State has accustomed. The team moves on to Lone Star Kingwood this weekend and with every regular season matchup coming to a close, and with every win column addition, the bobcats are quite ready to make their mark on the college club baseball world to the rest of the season and beyond.

Other Notables:

-The Team is batting with a .412 average on the year and has struck out 92 through 90 innings of play.

-Through 12 games Bobcat 3B Tyler David is batting a team leading .562 batting average.

Tim O’Reilly went 8 for 13 on the weekend while sporting a perfect inning bringing his Earned Run Average to 1.39 through 12 1/3 innings of work. He has struck out 16 and the lefty is huge addition to the bobcats this year in his first year of club baseball.

From San Marcos, Tx- The Texas State Club Baseball team squared up against Sam Houston State University for the first time this year in a three game series this past weekend. The Saturday/Sunday contests wrapped up with the fourth consecutive sweep by the Bobcats to bring their record to 11-1 on the year.

The weekend started off with right-hander Bobby Smiga dealing 5 innings of work and allowing only 1 run on 2 hits. Third baseman Tyler David and center fielder Sean Pilola (both 3-3) helped the offense to their 11 runs on the day, but no one contributed more in the early Saturday hours than that of senior pitcher/outfielder Matt Steiner. The Texas State slugger went 2-3 sending both of his hits well across the left field wall to tie Pilola for the team home run lead.

With one win underway it didn’t take long for game two starter Trenton Cox to continue his lights out pitching display. The Arlington native combined Bobby Smiga for the weekends’ complete game duo by pitching all 7 innings allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits, while sitting down 9 of the Sam Houston batters on strikeouts. Cox has worked a team leading 19 innings and 23 strikeouts in his 3 conference games thus far on the year.

Starting pitcher Matt Steiner walked his way out to the mound to complete the series finale with a win but was not so fortunate as he hoped in his 3 innings of work. Steiner allowed a season high 10 runs on 3 hits while walking 8. Although he sat down 5 batters in three innings the eluding strike zone seemed too much once again as workhorse freshman Tim O’ Reilly finished out the rest of the game by striking out 8 and allowing only 1 run on 5 hits. With the team down 10-2 going into the 4th inning there was a lot of work to do in the remaining 5 if they wanted to complete the sweep. Not letting a moment go by the resilient Texas State offense came through in story like fashion. The Bobcats plated 11 more runs to win the game 13-11 in what has become an almost expectancy to win for the Texas State team every time that their cleats hit the edge of the contested diamond.

The team is off for Easter but comes back to San Marcos once again the 14th and 15th for a matchup against Lone Star College Montgomery. With a series sweep the Bobcats will secure a spot for this years regionals in Mckinney, Tx.

Other Notables

Tyler David led the offense once again on the weekend going 6 for 8 raising his batting average to a team leading .594 on the year.

-Team Slugger Sean Pilola continued his tear on opponent pitching sporting a .875 slugging percentage for the season.

-Catcher Scott Sommerlatte batted 2-3 with a single and a double in the series finale.

(Archived) Vs. Lone Star College Kingwood

From San Marcos, Texas- The Texas State Club baseball team improved its team record to 5-1 as it swept the LSC-Kingwood Coyotes in the first Gulf Coast East conference series of the year. The team combined for 37 runs while continuing to hold opponents to 24 total runs on the year.

The weekend was one of obvious offense as the team left Seguin’s Smokey Joe Williams Field sporting a .424 batting average, which includes 9 extra base hits. Tyler David had a few defensive problems as he committed an unusual 5 out of the 12 Bobcat errors on the weekend. The Bobcat third baseman batted in the leadoff spot and went 8 for 15 yielding to a .615 batting average, giving two time player of the week, and team captain Sean Pilola a run for his money as the offensive spotlight. Pilola though, would have none of it as he batted 7 for 13 while knocking in 7 runs throughout the three game series. “Baseball is a team sport, and I couldn’t have had the success and gotten player of the week if it weren’t for the team.” The humility of the Texas State center fielder shines through and is really showing through the success of this club.

While offense was the key to winning these games, the defense was right there with it as game two starter, Trenton Cox, pitched brilliantly through 5 innings, allowing only 1 earned run and Striking out a team leading 10 batters. The sophomore pitcher was pleased with the outcome but notes that there was more the team could have done on the weekend. “Our defense really wasn’t there this weekend, but we were lucky and the bats really picked us up and got the job done.”-Trenton Cox

The team now invests in a two-week break, and then heads away to face Lone Star College Montgomery (3-0 Conference; 4-1 Overall). Pilola also spoke of the upcoming series saying, “Montgomery, was a team that we played and swept last year, they’ve got a great pitching and hitting squad and I’m looking forward to going out there. We have a lot of new people, and I’m sure they do too, so it should be a great series”

Other Notables:

Teddy Leonard went 5 for 9 in 2 games securing a team high .833 Batting Average.

Freshman Tim O’Reilly pitched twice in relief this weekend staying nearly perfect in his 3 innings. He allowed 1 hit, and struck out 4.

I can say that my mentality alone has changed tremendously from when I started this blog and I feel like i’m getting more rounded with every day that i’m blessed  to be a part of. Thanks Mr. Zmilky for this project. It’s been a great opportunity, and i’m excited to keep this blog going for all you seekers out there.

But enough about that! now it’s your turn to challenge yourself to meet your uncertainty! Make  your one year bucket list and lets see where you’re at 365 days from now! Part of my quest to experience uncertainty includes my enjoyment of service. We took our unused swipes to the streets of Austin and provided food for some of the homeless that we encountered. What’s some sort of service that you enjoy taking a part of and is it a significant part of your uncertainty? Please watch the Flickr slideshow below!

Fair Ball

A year ago, I did something I wasn’t quite sure I was ready for myself. You see, as a kid I played baseball throughout all of the little leagues, but in 7th grade I decided it wasn’t something that I wanted to keep pursuing. It was too hard for me, and music at the time seemed more interesting. I stood in cumber bun, bow tie, and all on metal risers watching my teacher delicately take the notes that we sing into his own artistry. Once I got into high school I wanted to get back into baseball but I was always scared of what would happen, so I stayed put. Don’t get me wrong, being in choir changed my life for the better. I met a lot of the best friends that I have now, and it gave me a love for music that I didn’t know was there but I still missed the game that I grew up with.

So when I got to college and had heard about Club Baseball I had no doubt in my mind what I wanted to do. I didn’t care if I didn’t make the team, or if I was even the worst one out there because the truth is, the worst thing they could say is “No”. So that’s exactly what I did. One year later, I sit on the team waiting to see if we make it regionals for the second straight year. Was i the worst on the field at tryout? Yes, but the passion and enjoyment I got out of being around the game gave them enough to keep me. Whatever your passion is, pursue it. There is no better time out there. I want to know what your passion is. Comment below and let me know!
